The 7-point checklist for your travel eSIM
Summer holidays are in full swing — and the eSIM is the one travel task you can still finish five minutes before boarding. Better: one or two days ahead. Here's the complete checklist, including everything that can go wrong in practice.
1. Can my phone even do eSIM?
iPhones from XR/XS, Samsung from Galaxy S20, Pixel from 3 — most current devices qualify. Check yourself: in the settings under "Cellular" (iPhone) or "Connections → SIM manager" (Samsung) there must be an option like "Add eSIM". Two pitfalls: the phone must be unlocked (occasionally still active on installment-plan devices), and some cheap import models lack eSIM despite carrying the same name. 2. EU or not EU? That decides everything
Within the EU you surf at domestic rates — usually nothing to do. It gets expensive outside: Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia, Albania and — depending on your plan — Switzerland are NOT included. 3. Estimate your data needs realistically
The most common mistake is a package that's too small — the second most common is an overpriced unlimited plan nobody needed. Rough guidance per person:

4. Install the eSIM at home — not at the destination
Scan the QR code, install the profile, done — before departure, on your home Wi-Fi. Why beforehand? Three reasons: at the destination you have no internet for the download without a working SIM. If problems come up, you can still reach support in peace. And for Turkey it's mandatory, since many eSIM providers' websites and apps are blocked there — only pre-installed profiles work reliably. 5. Bring a coupon code
Many providers run active discount codes between 10 and 25% — currently e.g. 15% at Airalo (WANDER15) or 20% at Nomad (GOALS20). 6. Switch off data roaming on your home SIM
Keep your home SIM active — you stay reachable for banking SMS TANs and calls. But: turn data roaming off and select the travel eSIM as your data line. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → your main SIM → disable "Data Roaming", then select the travel eSIM under "Cellular Data". On Android, the equivalent lives in the SIM manager. That way even a forgotten background app can't accidentally load anything over the expensive line.
7. WhatsApp just keeps working
Your number stays — WhatsApp is tied to your account, not the SIM. Nothing to reconfigure, nothing to re-verify, and you stay reachable as always. One exception: if you're moving WhatsApp to a new phone and changing numbers at the same time, do that before the trip. Details: eSIM + WhatsApp.
Common last-minute questions
Is buying at the airport enough? Yes, if the airport Wi-Fi cooperates — but it's the most stressful route. At home it takes five minutes without time pressure.
