You bought a travel eSIM, the email with the QR code arrived, you're ready to go — and nothing happens. Frustrating, but no drama. We know the list of typical causes from thousands of support requests. Work through the 7 points below, in order. In about 95 % of cases everything is sorted by point 4.
The 7 most common causes and fixes
- QR code has already been redeemedEach QR code is usually single-use. If you've already scanned the code (even if installation was aborted), it can be “used up.” Test: check your phone's SIM management (iOS: Settings → Cellular; Android: SIM Manager) to see if the eSIM profile is already there. If yes, just activate it — no need to scan again. If not and the QR is “empty,” contact provider support with your order number.
- No active internet connectioneSIM installation downloads the profile from a foreign SM-DP+ server. Your phone needs active data — either WiFi or mobile data over your main card. Test: turn on WiFi, open a website in the browser — does it work? Then the eSIM installation should run too. On a plane, with roaming off, or after DNS issues, installation fails.
- Screen brightness or scan distance wrongIf you're scanning the QR from a laptop or second phone and the scanner struggles: brightness to maximum, distance 15–25 cm, hold straight (not at an angle). Reflections from the screen can interfere — tilt the display slightly. Alternative: manual entry — alongside the QR, every provider supplies an SM-DP+ address and activation code as text. You can type those in directly.
- Phone has a SIM lock (carrier lock)If you bought your phone subsidized from a carrier (e.g. “iPhone for €1 with a Vodafone plan”), it's often locked to that carrier. Foreign eSIMs are then rejected on installation. Fix: request the unlock code from your carrier (most provide it free after 24 months of contract). Apply online in the carrier's service section, processing time 24–48 hours.
- Profile storage full or iOS / Android too oldYour phone only stores a limited number of eSIM profiles (typically 5 on older devices, 8 on iPhone 13+, Pixel 6+). If full, delete old / unused profiles. Minimum OS: current iOS (iPhone XS and newer), Android 9.0 (eSIM-capable devices). On very old OS: install updates, then try again.
- Data roaming not enabledProfile is installed but no network in the destination? Most common mistake: data roaming for the travel eSIM is off. From the phone's point of view a travel eSIM is technically “roaming” — even though that's exactly what it's made for. Fix: Settings → Cellular → [travel eSIM] → Data Roaming ON. On your home main card: data roaming OFF, otherwise you'll accidentally rack up expensive double-roaming charges.
- Default SIM for mobile data set wrongOn a dual-SIM setup (main card + travel eSIM) you must explicitly choose which SIM provides mobile data. iOS: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → select travel eSIM. Android (Samsung/Pixel): SIM Manager → Preferred SIM for Mobile Data → travel eSIM. If it's set to the home card, everything runs over that one — and the travel eSIM does nothing.
How to avoid QR problems in the first place
Contacting provider support
If you've worked through all 7 steps and it still doesn't work, provider support is usually the next call. What you should have ready:
Order number from the confirmation email · EID
number of your phone (read out via *#06#) ·
Model + OS version of your smartphone · What exactly
happens on the installation attempt (a screenshot of the error message
helps).
Response times of the major providers:
Airalo — live chat in the app, usually answer in 5–15 min. · Holafly — 24/7 chat (AI + human escalation) · Simbye — email support, answer in 12–24 hrs. · Nomad — in-app chat · Ubigi — email + phone
Common questions about QR problems
Can I use the same QR code multiple times?
No, usually not. Each QR code is restricted to one activation. Once you've scanned it and the profile has been downloaded, the code is “used up.” Providers like Airalo show this on a second scan attempt with an error message. Exception: if the initial installation was aborted (internet dropped, app closed), the code is often still valid. If lost, contact support with your order number.
What does the message “eSIM cannot be activated” mean?
Several possible causes: (1) No active internet connection — your phone needs WiFi or data over your main card to load the profile from the SM-DP+ server. (2) SIM lock — your phone is locked to a carrier. (3) iOS / Android version too old (iOS < 12.1, Android < 9). (4) Profile storage full (max. 8 eSIMs on iPhone 13+, often only 5 on older models). (5) Server downtime at the provider — rare, but worth asking support.
My phone shows no “Add eSIM” option at all
Then either no eSIM chip is installed (check via *#06# — no EID number = no hardware) or your phone is a regional variant without eSIM (common with China/Hong Kong imports of Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei). In both cases nothing can be fixed via software — it's a hardware limitation. More: device finder.
Does restarting the phone help?
More often than you'd think — yes. Your phone's modem reinitializes all SIM profiles on boot. If activation hangs, or the profile is visible but doesn't connect to the network, a restart fixes the problem about 40 % of the time. It costs 30 seconds — worth the first try.
Does activation work in airplane mode?
No. Installing the eSIM profile needs an active internet connection (WiFi or mobile data from your main card). In airplane mode both are off. So perform activation before airplane mode (e.g. at home or in airport WiFi). It won't work on the plane itself.
What to do if the QR code looks damaged?
QR codes are robust against small scratches (Reed-Solomon error correction), but heavy damage or poor image quality can prevent scanning. Solution: instead of scanning, enter the SM-DP+ server address + activation code manually (both are in the same provider email as the QR). Path: iOS “Enter details manually,” Android “Enter activation code manually.”
Can I buy an eSIM after I arrive at my destination?
Yes — most travel eSIM providers (Airalo, Holafly, Simbye) offer their plans online worldwide. But you need internet to buy — either airport WiFi, hotel WiFi or a friendly fellow traveler with a working connection. Tip: install the provider app on your home WiFi before departure, then you're quick to act if needed.
I accidentally deleted the eSIM — can I restore it?
With many providers not directly. The QR code is usually used up. First steps: (1) log in to your provider account, possibly “Re-Install” in the app. (2) Contact support with your order number — often accommodating for a one-off incident. (3) In the worst case, buy a new plan. Prevention: only deactivate the eSIM instead of deleting it if you might need it again.
