From 11 June to 19 July 2026, FIFA stages the first 48-team World Cup across the USA, Canada and Mexico, with 104 matches in 16 host cities. Anyone going — whether for a round-of-16 tie, a group-stage tour across three stadiums, or the final in New Jersey — needs an eSIM. Roaming on your home plan costs €5-9 per day in North America; a 14-day eSIM starts under €20.

Three countries, one eSIM

The multi-country strategy

What separates a run-of-the-mill roaming-comparison article from a real tool: the multi-country plans. Currently the cheapest providers in the North America comparison: RedteaGO, Trip.com, Airalo and Ubigi. These packages cover the USA, Canada and Mexico in a single eSIM — you can travel back and forth between the three countries without swapping eSIMs. We have 427 North America plans in the database; the cheapest starts at 1,55 €.

Canada — Toronto and Vancouver

Canada gets 13 matches in two stadiums: BMO Field in Toronto and BC Place in Vancouver — both downtown with excellent mobile coverage via Rogers, Bell and Telus. Crossing the border from the USA: single-country USA plans do not work in Canada, but multi-country North America plans do. In Vancouver especially, unwanted latching onto the US network happens more often — a good eSIM app can be locked to CA networks.

Mexico — Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey

Mexico hosts 13 matches in three stadiums, including the opening match on 11 June at the historic Estadio Azteca (Mexico City, capacity 83,000). Telcel is the market leader and the backbone for most travel eSIMs; AT&T Mexico is the alternative. The same recommendations apply to the stadiums in Zapopan (Guadalajara) and Guadalupe (Monterrey). FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need three eSIMs for the USA, Canada and Mexico, or is one enough?

If you're only in one country: a single-country plan is usually cheapest and gives you the fastest network. If you visit at least two of the three countries, a North America plan almost always pays off (providers like Nomad, Saily, Airalo and RedteaGO offer them). One eSIM, three countries, no switching — often even cheaper than three separate plans. The trip picker above works this out live for the matches you select.

Does an eSIM work inside the World Cup stadiums?

Yes, in all 16 host cities. The stadiums themselves have professional indoor mobile coverage (Distributed Antenna Systems) — you'll still have data even in a packed stadium. Capacity spikes right before kick-off or during goal celebrations can cause brief latency; that's true of any SIM. Tip: upload photos and live streams right after the final whistle, not during the match.

Which network does my eSIM use in the USA?

Most travel eSIMs (Airalo, Simbye, Nomad, RedteaGO) route over T-Mobile USA — nationwide the second-strongest network with solid 5G in all 11 US host cities. Holafly uses AT&T or T-Mobile depending on location. Verizon is rarely available because its roaming agreements are more restrictive. For stadiums in rural locations (Foxborough/Boston) Verizon is sometimes stronger — Holafly may have an edge there.

What does a typical 14-day World Cup trip cost?

Realistically for moderate use (Maps, social media, catching up on highlights, ~700 MB/day, i.e. 10 GB / 14 days): €15-25 as a multi-country North America plan. For heavy users (streaming matches, hotspot for a laptop): 20+ GB or unlimited, around €30-55. Three separate country plans for USA+CA+MX typically add up to €35-50 — so multi-country is almost always cheaper.

Doesn't EU roaming apply in the USA?

No. EU roaming (“Roam Like At Home”) only applies within the EU/EEA. The USA, Canada and Mexico are completely outside it — your home plan typically costs €5-9 per day there, and pay-per-MB billing is often even more expensive. That's exactly why a travel eSIM is almost a forced choice for World Cup trips: 14 days of US roaming on your home SIM can quickly hit €100+, an eSIM €15-25.

Does a USA eSIM also work for a match in the Tijuana / San Diego border region?

As long as you're on the US side: yes. The moment you physically cross into Mexico (or your phone latches onto a Mexican network), a US-only eSIM stops working. In border cities (San Diego, El Paso) your phone can latch onto Mexican networks unintentionally — lock it to the US network manually, or use a North America multi-country plan that covers both countries.

When should I activate the eSIM?

Most providers only start counting the validity period once you connect to the local network in the destination — not from the moment you order. You can install the eSIM at home before departure (scan the QR code, load the profile onto your phone), but it only activates when you register on T-Mobile USA / Bell Canada / Telcel Mexico. Some providers (e.g. Holafly on certain plans) start the period immediately though — check when buying.
